Our Third Anniversary!

Well, this week was pretty special. It was the 3rd anniversary of our weekly breakfast, and we had a good turnout. A typical week has your 3 founding members, TB, DO and myself holding down the fort, but if we’re … Continue reading

Duponti Cafe, 284 Dupont St.

3 stars (out of 5)                 This place is really designed as a take-out lunch spot. They have Chinese, Indian, Korean and Japanese dishes, so of course, we went for breakfast.

Average Joe’s Cafe, 161 Baldwin St.

4 stars (out of 5)           This was one of the most carefully prepared and attractively presented breakfasts on our now 135 week tour of breakfast spots in Toronto (~115 different establishments).

The Patrician Grill (redux), 219 King St. E.

4 stars (out of 5) I’m writing this update WITHOUT reading my previous review. The Patrician was the first stop in what has ended up being a 2 1/2 year long, weekly breakfast get-together with friends. We’ve been to almost … Continue reading

El Cafetal, 1006 St.Clair Ave. W.

4 stars (out of 5) A few weeks ago, my breakfast hombres and I walked by this place after eating at the Sunnyside Grill a little west, and decided to add it to the Tour to add some variety. It … Continue reading

The Emerald Bar and Grill, 1628 Queen St. E.

3 stars (out of 5)                 This place opened as the Emerald Grill in 1952 and operated as a diner, jukeboxes and all.

Hazel’s Diner, 523 Mt. Pleasant Rd.

3 stars (out of 5) Breakfast at this newish, attractive eatery was uninspired, to say the least. The decor (at bottom) set it apart from a typical diner or greasy spoon, but the breakfast special was just about average.

Eggspectation, 220 Yonge St.

2 stars (out of 5) This place was below eggspectations. It was overpriced (above our guidelines – not sure how it slipped through), under-valued and our breakfast was inconsistent.

Eggsmart, 645 Bay St.

3 stars (out of 5) This characterless chain serves perfectly average breakfasts. The eggs were fried, the bread was toasted, the potatoes boiled then fried, and the coffee was…poured.

Avenue Open Kitchen (redux), 7 Camden St.

4.5 stars (out of 5) We first visited the AOK, hidden away on a side street near the financial district, very early on our “Spoon Tour”. In fact, it was June 2010, just a month in. I forgot to review … Continue reading

Sunset Grill, 45 Wicksteed Ave. (#100!)

4 stars (out of 5) This restaurant represents the 100th different stop on The Spoon Tour. Over two years ago, we began this weekly adventure to investigate the best and worst of diner-style breakfasts in Toronto with The Patrician. We … Continue reading

Boom Breakfast & Co. 1036 St Clair Ave W.

3.5 stars (out of 5) A few elements detract from the enjoyment of this clean, efficient breakfast spot. First is the “chain” vibe…for good reason – it is part of a chain. Next is smaller details like their breakfast potato. … Continue reading

The Sunnyside Grill, 1218 St. Clair Ave. W.

4 stars (out of 5) This is an attractive, clean restaurant that serves a good, greasy spoon style breakfast for cheap. The Traditional Breakfast contains two large eggs served with bacon,  ham or sausage, country griddled potatoes and thick sliced … Continue reading

Ontario Restaurant, 383 Dundas St. E.

3 stars (out of 5) They’ve changed their name (and signage) to “Ontario Restaurant” from “Ontario Bistro” which is good, ’cause this ain’t no bistro. That being said, it’s interior is a pleasant surprise when judging by the exterior, and … Continue reading

Grapefruit Moon, 968 Bathurst St.

4 stars (out of 5) Come on a Monday morning at 9:30 and you won’t have to wait in line to experience the eclectic hipster vibe which includes glass milk bottles for water and mismatched tableware.

Lunch Box, 1731 Bloor St. W.

3.75 stars (out of 5) This place doesn’t really qualify as a greasy spoon or a diner, but it’s breakfast special is called “The Greasy Spoon”, so it counts!

Kensingtons, 181 Baldwin St.

1 star (out of 5) First of all, what’s the deal with the name? Is it plural? Is it missing an apostrophe? I’ll vote for bad grammar. Anyway, we were headed to Dag’s across the street in Kensington Market, but … Continue reading

New Town Family Restaurant, 266 Coxwell Ave.

Church Street Diner, 555 Church St.

3.75 stars (out of 5) Great Caesar’s Toast! (I’ll get back to that later.) This “diner”, though self-identified as a “diner” isn’t really a diner, at least in my mind. It does have a diner-like menu, but the vibe and … Continue reading
